This body of work formed part of my undergraduate degree which made the comparison between contemporary scenes of people engaged with digital devices and images from old masters' religious paintings. During the 12th century Abbot Suger introduced stained glass into the Cathedral of Saint-Denis in the IIe-de- France theorizing the effect of the coloured light thus admitted to the space as ‘Lux nova’, symbolic of ‘divine light’. My work explores the idea that this reflection or light from the digital screen is symbolic of this generation’s ‘Lux nova’ (new light) the light from technology. Using paint and references to painterly traditions my work examines contemporary ideas about communication, truth, devotion and isolation.
